Marc Ranger gave Palomo’s studio a little something to look at. His fresco turns the space into a colourful playground of bodies, movement, and temptation, because apparently a wall can have a sex life too. We caught up with him to talk colour, desire, cruising, being looked at, and other pressing gay matters.
WHAT DOES GOOD GAY ART LOOK LIKE TO YOU?
For me, good gay art strikes a balance between taste, fantasy, and humour.
IF YOU WERE TO MAKE A MURAL FOR A LOVER’S APARTMENT, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
I’d replicate what I imagine their inner world to look like. I want to make them feel seen.
WHAT’S MORE SEDUCTIVE: BEING LOOKED AT OR DOING THE LOOKING?
Looking. I think it’s important to be romantic in daily life, and looking is the first step. The act of imagining possibilities seduces me way more than the idea of performing.
WHAT’S THE SEXIEST ROOM YOU’VE EVER BEEN IN?
I love a cedar wood-burning sauna.
YOUR FRESCOES OFTEN FEEL LIKE GLIMPSES INTO VERY PRIVATE WORLDS—WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS JUST OUTSIDE THE FRAME?
My frescoes hide in plain sight. They are charged with a multiplicity of gestures and body language that transport you into whatever private world you deeply desire at any given moment.
IF SOMEONE WERE TO SPEND THE NIGHT INSIDE ONE OF YOUR PAINTINGS, WHAT WOULD THEY WAKE UP TO?
Probably just me staring at them cryptically, with my head tilted and my hand on my hip.
HAVE YOU EVER USED YOUR ART AS AN EXCUSE TO SLEEP WITH SOMEONE?
No. And why would I need an excuse? If anything, my art practice has protected me from completely losing myself in love and lust. It is the one thing in this world that belongs to me alone. In turn, it has helped me develop a strong sense of integrity and personal sovereignty—which, honestly, I find much more attractive anyway.

HAVE YOU EVER HAD A CRUSH ON SOMEONE YOU PAINTED OR MADE A FRESCO FOR?
Last spring, I painted a fresco for my then-boyfriend of five years and me in our home. Since May, it’s seen more of him than I ever did. Now it’s just the two of us (me and the fresco).
WHAT’S THE GAYEST THING ABOUT COLOUR?
Colour is a universal, coded language. It’s clever and subversive.
